THE HARBOUR OF MAÓ- Feeling a fresh atmosphere

Menorca is the second biggest island in the Balearics. This peaceful and attractive bit of land can offer you a relaxing place to rest. I’d like to emphasize the picturesque Harbour of Maó, which is really successful due to its natural length. Moreover, our port is located in Maó, which makes it easier to be visited.

Firstly, when you look at your surroundings, you can feel a historical atmosphere, because Menorca was the perfect place for pirates to get power or to be the owners of the Mediterranean. Furthermore, during the summer holidays, our harbour is usually used so as to carry out some exciting activities like sailing small boats, which are called optimist.

Finally, if you walk along the seafront, on one side you will see the dark blue sea, where, frequently, quite big ships moor and on the other side, there is plenty of whatever you want to find, well-known restaurants, busy bars at nights, lively pubs, little businesses, etc. I should say that what I love most are the tasty ice-creams, which are made of several flavours by Italian experts.

For this reason, if you are looking for huge cities, this is not your suitable place; but, who wants big places if you can enjoy yourself in a place like this! you will not only fall in love with it, but you will also look forward to coming back. That’s for sure!

MAHON HARBOUR

I recommend visiting the harbour of Mahón because it's the second largest natural port in Europe ,almost 6 km long, and it's a harbour every tourist should see. It's situated in the centre of the western Mediterranean, and there have been many conquests and battles. Currently, it has a tourist function (many cruisers arrive throughout the year) but it also has an industrial one (loading and unloading of materials).

Menorca has a rich history: there were many invasions because it's situated in a strategic place for military and dealers. Menorca has a good temperature throughout the year with a typical Mediterranean climate: summers are hot and winters are mild and wet. The typical cold wind is what we call “vent de Tramuntana”. The typical Menorcan species are: “sargantanes” (lizards), red cows and Menorcan horses.

In the harbour there are restaurants, bars, discos, ice cream parlours, a chemist and even a casino and it's only two minutes from the town center! What I like about it is that normally, in summer there is a lot of activity: you can see families going for a walk, foreign people dining in restaurants, people riding bikes...

In short, I recommend this tour because it's very nice. Moreover, you can go up the steps of “Ses Voltes” from where you have wonderful views of Mahon harbour which I really like.
